Condition

ACL Rehabilitation

Criteria-based ACL rehab from pre-hab through to return-to-sport clearance.

Signs & symptoms

What it usually looks like

  • Knee gave way during a cut or landing
  • Swelling within a few hours
  • Instability on turning
  • Quadriceps wasting

Symptoms overlap between injuries, which is why assessment starts with mechanism and load history rather than a scan. Treatment is then matched to the tissue that actually failed.

Rehabilitation timeline

Phase by phase

  1. 0–2 weeks

Swelling control, full extension, quad activation.

  2. 2–12 weeks

Range, gait, progressive strength and balance.

  3. 3–6 months

    Running, plyometrics, change of direction.

  4. 9–12 months

    Return-to-sport testing and clearance.

FAQs

ACL Rehabilitation — common questions

Do I definitely need surgery?

Not always. Some athletes cope well with rehab alone; pivoting sports usually favour reconstruction.

When can I play football again?

Typically 9–12 months post-op and only after passing return-to-sport testing.
